Preventive Dentistry

We can certainly fix problems as they arise, but we stress preventing them from even starting. The whole focus of our practice is teaching patients and parents how to keep their mouths healthy for a lifetime.

Preventive Measures

Maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile begins with the appearance of the first tooth. Children should have their first dental checkup at this point to assess oral health, look for potential problems and assess fluoride needs.

Here are some of the preventive measures we provide:

  • Regular cleanings. A dental cleaning removes the plaque and tartar. These “biofilms” can contribute to tooth decay and other serious dental issues.
  • Sealants. Dental sealants are thin coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. This process protects the tooth from decay in those particularly susceptible areas.
  • Guiding erupting teeth. When teeth are erupting out of their proper position, guiding them into alignment can help prevent larger problems.
  • Fluoride treatments. We suggest a topical fluoride treatment at every check-up to strengthen the teeth and make them more cavity resistant.

Preventive Care At Home

Parents need to take an active role in their children’s oral hygiene and good dental habits. It is the role of the parents to encourage daily brushing and flossing habits, to provide a balanced, low-sugar diet and to reinforce the importance of regular dental checkups.
